ليس بدعاً في الرأي، اعتبار "الأدب الأموي"، أدباً وسيطاً بين حقبتين، في تاريخ الفكر العربي: فهو، من ناحية متّصل، بتراث الجاهلية متفاعلاً والإسلام، وهو من ناحية ثانية المجرى الأساسي، في خضم الأدب العباسي المتأثر بروافد الثقافات الدخيلة، والمتنامي بفعل تفتح الذهنية العربية. ويمكن القول بأن لكل أدب جذور من الماضي، وأفنان تمتد لتكون في أصول الحاضر والآتي، والأدب زمن الأمويين لا يشذ عن هذه الظاهرة، ومع هذا، فإن له في حدوده والعوامل المكوّنة له والمؤثرة فيه، شخصيته الثقافية، التي هي من ملامح الثقافة العربية عامة.
انطلاقاً من هذه الرؤية يستعرض الكاتب في مؤلفه هذا نماذج أدبية أموية، كان حرصه خلال استعراضها إلقاء الضوء على مواقف أصحاب الفن فيها، والإحاطة بكل لوازم الأطر التاريخية، والنفسية والفنية، لذا مثّل كل فصل من فصول هذا الكتاب أعمدة ثابتة وخطوط مركزة، هي بمجملها من صميم البحث الأدبي. إلى جانب ذلك وفضلاً عن إحاطة المؤلف بأطر العصر الأموي وبيئته، جغرافياً، وسياسياً، واجتماعياً، وفكرياً، فقد عنى المؤلف بالتاريخ لحياة كل شاعر وأديب، مبيناً صفاته وأخلاقه، مع إلمامة وجيزة بفنّه ومعاصريه من الرؤساء وأعلام الفكر، متبعاً ذلك كله بـ "النص الأدبي" الأبرز في آثاره، مقرناً ذلك بإيضاح لغوي، وبتحليل للموقف الذي يشتمل النص عليه، وذلك من خلال عرض متأنٍّ، بعيد عن اللغو والاستطراد، بأسلوب مبسط ولغة سهلة، ليخلص المؤلف من ثم إلى عرض خصائص النص.
وبهذا جاءت هذه الدراسة وافية بجوانب هامة وقيمة من هذا الأدب العربي الرفيع الذي لم يزل ذكره مستمراً رغم تطاول الزمن عليه.
