والمعروف عن المقامات بشكلها الظاهري أنها تدور على الكدية والإستجداء ولكن الحريري قصد في تأليفها نقد المجتمع نقداً بناءً، عسى أن تجد لهذه العيوب إصلاحاً، فأسلوب عرضها خفيف وعباراتها رشيقة يسهل على القارئ فهمها، خصوصاً وأنها تتناول قضايا تخصهم كالمشاكل الإجتماعية.
الحريري صاحب المقامات كان أحد أئمة عصره، اشتملت مقاماته على شيء كثير من كلام العرب ومن لغاتها وأمثالها ورموزها وأسرار كلامها.
تدور مقامات الحريري حول إبتزاز المال عن طريق الحيلة من خلال مغامرات بطلها أبي زيد السروجي التي يرويها الحارث بن همّام.
