وهو نوع من القصص القصيرة مليئة بالحركة التمثيلية وهو فن من فنون الكتابة العربية ابتكره بديع الزمان الهمذاني يدور الحوار فيها بين شخصين، ويلتزم مؤلفها بالصنعة الأدبية التي تعتمد على السجع والبديع. يقال أن أول من بدأ في كتابتها الهمذاني في سنة 1101 م وانتهى منها عام 1110 م. و أنشأ المقامة الحرامية ثم بنيت عليها سائر المقامات التي تبلغ خمسين مقاماً.
