في الليل، في وقت متأخر من الليل، سمعت طرقاً على باب منزلي، فتحت الباب، فوجدت رجلاً متعباً، كالمرضى أو أشباه الموتى، طلب كوب ماء ومبيت ليلة، فأدخلته، وأسقيته ماء، وقدمت له طعاماً، وهيأت له سريراً، ونام.
وفي اليوم التالي، لم يتكلم ولم يخرج من المنزل، فاحترمت صمته، وبقيت ساكتاً أنا أيضاً، وقدرت حاجته للطعام، فوفرت له ثلاث وجبات على أنغام الموسيقى، ومضى اليوم.. وفي اليوم الذي تلاه، قلب: لا بد أنه يحزم أمره للرحيل، فصنعت له فنجان قهوة، وفنجاناً آخر لي، وجلست إلى جواره حول طاولة الطعام.
قلت له: أنا لم أتعرف على الأخ ظننت أنه لم يسمع فأعدت كلامي نفسه مرة ثانية، فقال: أنا طائر! فاستغربت جوابه، وتمالكت غضبي، وقلت: لكنك بلا جناحين أو منقار أو ريش. وعاد فسكت قليلاً، ثم أضاف: هذه أوصاف لم تعد مهمة.
