غلب على دراسات رضوان السيد واهتماماته الانشغال بموضوع "السياسة" في المجال الإسلامي، وكان قد أعد نفسه بحثياً ومنهجياً لهذه المهمة الصعبة، من خلال إطلاعه بصورة مبكرة على موضوعات التراث والتاريخ الحدثي والثقافي والسياسي العربي الإسلامي، ومن خلال امتلاك الأدوات المعرفية اللازمة التي أهلته لمتابعة الدراسات عن الإسلام مستخدماً المنهجيات الحديثة في مجال التاريخ الثقافي، أو في مجالات اجتماعيات المعرفة التي كانت المدخل الرئيس لأبحاثه في ميدان الإسلام. فضلاً عن ذلك، فقد عمل على تفحص المواقف المتضاربة من الإسلام من قبل العديد من الاتجاهات والقوى التي تنافست على تفسيره وامتلاكه.
من هنا توزعت اهتماماته حول ثلاثة محاور أساسية، موضوعها الرئيس "سياسات الإسلام"، حيث انصرف في المحور الأول إلى تفحص التجربة السياسية الإسلامية في العصر الوسيط. وانصرف في المحور الثاني إلى تحليل ونقد تجربة الإسلام المعاصر في وجهيها الحركي والنظري. أما المحور الثالث يتعلق بتصوراته عن المستقبل الممكن والمستحيل الذي ينوس بين التصالح مع العالم والتاريخ، أو التخاصم مع الذات والعالم.
فالإسلام والسياسات الإسلامية، هي المواضيع المحورية لأبحاث السيد برمتها، ويحاول هذا الكتاب تتبع أفكاره من خلالها.
