يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في حياة وشعر يزيد من الطثريَّة (توفي سنة 126هـ)، صنعه في طبعة جديدة الأستاذ الدكتور حاتم صالح الضامن، وبدأة بنشأته وقصة حبه، حيث رأى في أول حياته كان شاعرنا يحيا حياة عبث ولهو وغزل وحبّ، وعن صفاته كان يزيد جواداً مِتلافاً، وكان لقبه مُوَدِّقاً، سمي بذلك لحسن وجهه وحلاوة حديثه، فكانوا يقولون: إنه إذا جلس بين النساء وَدَقُهنَّ، أي فتنُهنّ بجماله وحلاوة حديثه، وعن شعره كان ابن الطثرية شاعراً مطبوعاً فصيحاً، كامل الأدب وافر المروءة لا يُعاب ولا يُطعن عليه، وكان سخياً شجاعاً، له أصل ومحل في قومه من قُشير، وكان من شعراء بني أمية مُقدماً عندهم.
ولعل أهم ما يعني القارئ من أحداث حياة ابن الطثرية، هو الحبّ، فقد كان الحب هو الباعث الأول على قول الشعر، وكان النسيب غالباً على شعره، ولولا نسيبه لما عُرِف في تاريخ الأدب العربي، ولما ذُكِرَ... فقد عرف ابن الطثرية عند الأقدمين بأنه أحدُ من تيمهم الحبّ، حتى عدّه الوشاء بين من شهروا بالصبوة والغزل من شعراء العرب، وقرنه ابن شرف بالقيسين وجميل.
يضم الكتاب ديوان يزيد بن الطثرية، وقد استدرك مؤلفه كثيراً من الأبيات من المصادر التي صدرت طوال أربعين سنة، وشرح كثيراً من مفرداته، ووزعه على بحور الشعر الموزون والمقفي في (95) مقطعاً شعرياً كانت مجمل قصائد الشاعر، وأضاف إليها "ما نسب إلى يزيد وليس له" وهي أربعة عناوين "ومعتصم"، "وقرانا"، "الحدثان"، "لكفاني".
