لا شك أن سعيد عقل علامة مميزة في شعر اللغة العربية المعاصر، فهو قد أتى رعشة جديدة في جسم الشعر، خاصة في فترة ما بين الحربين، انكب عليه الدارسون والباحثون، فكتبت الأبحاث الجامعية في شعره، وتركت المؤلفات في نتاجه.
وسعيد عقل ظاهرة تستحق الدرس، لقد كان أنجح من تحدث في موضوع الوعي واللاوعي في الشعر، وأبرع من طبَّق مقاييس النظرية الرمزية في كتاباته، فكان أخلص الشعراء للشعر، في فترة انكب فيها على النتاج الشرقي والغربي من لاهوت وفلسفة وأدب، فعرف كيف يستفيد من كل هذه الثقافات المتشعبة المصادر.
وما تم دراسته في هذا الكتاب في شعر سعيد عقل هو "الفرح"، فالفرح ظاهرة جديدة في شعر اللغة العربية، لم يدرسها النقاد دراسة موضوعية كافية، بل كان يشار إليها عن غير قصد، وكان أول من أشار إلى ظاهرة الفرح في شعر سعيد عقل هو الشاعر صلاح لبكي، في كتابه "لبنان الشاعر" وذلك بأسطرٍ قليلة يقول: من أين جاءته فكرة الفرح؟ ربما من المسيحية، فسعيد عقل كثير التبسط في الفلسفة واللاهوت، والمسيحية قالت دائماً بالفرح، رفعت الأجراس لإشاعة الفرح.
وعليه، تهدف هذه الدراسة لفهم عنصر الفرح في بعض شعر سعيد عقل حتى الخمسينات وخاصة في دواوين المجدلية وقدموس ورندلى.
