إِنَّني كَتَبتُ هَذا الكِتابَ حَتّى يَكونَ مُعيناً لِكُلِّ مُريدٍ لِهَذا الفَنِّ وَكُلِّ راغِبٍ فيهِ مِمَّن لا قُدرَةَ لَهُ على مُطالَعَةِ أُمَّهاتِ الكُتُبِ، حَتّى يَقِفَ عَلى أُسُسِهِ وَأُصولِهِ المُتَعَلِّقَةِ بِهِ، وَقَد ذَكَرتُ فيهِ ما لِلشّاعِرِ مِن رُخَصٍ وما عَلَيهِ مِن آدابٍ يَنبَغي أَن يَتَحَلّى بِها وَتَكَلَّمتُ عَنِ الشِّعرِ وَفَوائِدِهِ وَخَصائِصِهِ، لَعَلَّهُ يَكونُ نافِعاً لِمَن قَرَأَهُ، وَهُوَ مُجمَلٌ غَيرُ مُفَصَّلٍ فَإِنَّ وَراءَ كُلِّ بابٍ مِن أَبوابِهِ كُتُبٌ عِظامٌ فَصَّلَتهُ، وَلَكِنَّني مَعنِيٌّ بِتَقديم هَذا الفَنِّ وَتَقريبِهِ لِمُحبّيهِ كاختصارٍ يُعينُهُم عَلى فَهمِهِ وَإِدراكِهِ وَمِن ثَمَّ طَلَبِهِ مِن مَنابِعِهِ.
