إن تاريخ المؤسسة المصرفية في الدول العربية وعمل في بيئات متباينة سياسياً واقتصادياً والدور الذي تمارسه يلقى أهمية كبيرة على موضوع الدراسة، ويحدد الأطر العامة لمشكلتها التي تتمحور في كيفية مواجهة المؤسسة المصرفية العربية للتحديات المعاصرة والمستقبلية في ظل بيئات محلية مختلفة في سماتها وتعاملها مع المتغيرات والتحديات العالمية. لقد تميز النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين بتدفق العوائد النفطية في عدد من الدول العربية، وإذا كانت الأموال منزلة المادة الخام التي تتعامل بها المصارف، فهل استطاعت المؤسسة المصرفية العربية أن تستوعب تلك الأموال وعوائدها خلال تلك الحقبة من الزمن؟ لقد نشأت عشرات المصارف داخل العالم العربي وخارجه نتيجة لتلك التطورات النفطية في السبعينات والثمانينات، فهل استطاعت تلك المصارف أن تتحول إلى مؤسسات مصرفية عربية وطنية وقومية كفوءة وفاعلة لتنتقل من المحلية إلى العالمية؟ تسعى الدراسة التي بين يدينا إلى الإجابة عن تلك التساؤلات، كما تهدف إلى تشخيص مجمل المستجدات والظواهر العالمية، وتحديد أطر بيئات الأعمال العربية ومعالمها، وتقييم مدى استجابتها وتفاعلها مع تلك الظواهر، وتهدف كذلك إلى توصيف المؤسسة المصرفية العربية ومحاولة تحديد موقعها ضمن تصنيفات المصارف العالمية، ومن ثم التركيز على استراتيجية الاندماج ورسم سيناريو ولوحات محددة لها تبعاً لعوامل صياغتها وتنفيذها، وتحديد الاتجاهات العالمية المؤسسية للمصارف في ظل ظاهرة العولمة وتحدياتها لتشكيل خيارات استراتيجية للمؤسسة المصرفية العربية.
