شعر أبي نواس قوس قزح متعدّد الألوان متفاوت الدرجات والمواقع. وفي مختلف الحالات، يلمح القارىء في شعره شخصه الممزّق بين حدّ القبول وحدّ الرفض. في قبوله القديم تغيب الأنا ويحضر الآخر، وفي رفضه القديم حضور الأنا وغياب الآخر. بيد واحدة يحمل لواء القديم، ولواء الجديد المحدث. وفي كلا الوضعين يجنح إلى الصورة كوسيلة من وسائل التعبير عن مسألة القبول ومسألة الرفض. ففي القبول صورة تحتضن القديم الواقع وتؤتمن عليه، وفي الرفض صورة تهدم "القدم" لترفع على أنقاضه مواقع "الجدّة". لذا اعتبره النقاد أروح من فتح في تاريخ الشعر العربي، معركة الصراع بين القديم والحديث. فقالوا أنه حالة شعرية تبلورت فيها مسألة القدامى والمحدثين.
في هذا الكتاب يختار الدكتور ساسين عساف دراسة "الصورة الشعرية ونماذجها في إبداع أبي نواس" في ضوء مفاهيم الصورة وأنواعها ودلالاتها متوغلاً في عالم ابي نواس، إنساناً ذا موقف مأساوي من الحياة والموت والمجهول. وشاعراً مبدعاً عبّر عن تجربة الإنسان العربي في العصر العباسي الأول بكل أبعادها الفكرية والنفسية والحضارية.
تتألف الدراسة من ستة فصول. في الفصل الأول، بحث موجز في الفن والشعر. في الفصل الثاني، بجث في الصورة الشعرية. وفي الفصل الثالث، دراسة عن الصورة في المذاهب الأدبية. وفي الفصل الرابع، قراءة عن الصورة في آراء نقاد العرب والشعر الجاهلي والأموي. وفي الفصل الخامس نبذة عن: أبو نواس: حياته وملامح عصره. ويأتي الفصل السادس والأخير: نماذج الصورة ومناخاتها في إبداع أبي نواس وتعيين مركزه في مسار الأدب.
