الصورة الشعرية هي مادة بحث واسع يستدعي معرفة تامة بوجهات نظر النقد الغربي والعربي في آن. وبهدف تحقيق هذا الغرض يقدم الدكتور ساسين عساف في هذا الكتاب – كما يقول - : خدمة ولو متواضعة للنقد العربي المعاصر لأن النقاد العرب القدامى والمعاصرين، على قاعدة التعميم والشمول، لم يدرسوا "الصورة الشعرية" بطريقة نظامية ومنهجية. لقد جاءت آراؤهم فيها منثورة في نتاجاتهم النقدية التي يحاولون فيها دراسة الشعر العربي القديم والحديث والمعاصر".
إذن، ووفقاً لتلك الؤية يعد هذا العمل بمثابة خطوة في طريق النقد الأدبي الذي يدرس الشعر انطلاقاً من وجهة نظر تدعو إلى دراسة لغته من دون أن يتخلى عن دراسة الأصول التاريخية والإجتماعية والنفسية.
وفي الكتاب يستعرض الكاتب وجهتي نظر الغربية والعربية في الصورة الشعرية والمدارس النقدية الحديثة، وأهم من كتبوا في هذا الفن، وأنواع الصورة الشعرية (الكلاسيكية – الرومانطيقية، الرمزية، والسريالية) ونماذج عنها مع التحليل والشرح والنقد، ليخلص إلى نتيجة مفادها : "أن النقد العربي بحاجة إلى أن يتطور لكي يستطيع الدارس أن يفهم، أن يتذوق، وأن يقدم الأدب العربي بموضوعيى أكثر تجرداً، وبواقعية أقرب إلى الحقيقة منها إلى الوهم أو التجني، وبمنهجية أشد وضوحاً وثباتاً".
يتألف الكتاب من مقدمة وخمسة محاور، يستعرض المحور الأول الفن الشعري بصورة عامة، بينما يرتكز المحور الثاني على "اللغة الشعرية مادة وشكل"، ويدرس المحور الثالث "الصورة الشعرية: المحاكاة – الرؤيا – سيكولوجيا الصورة" ، ويتحرى المحور الرابع "الصورة في بعض الإتجاهات الشعرية" ، أما المحور الخامس والأخير فهو بمثابة تأملات واستنتاجات ووجهات نظر خلص إليها الكاتب.
