يشتمل كتاب البلدان للعلامة آبى عبد الله أحمد بن إسحاق الهمذاني (المعروف بابن الفقيه) على ضروب من أخبار البلدان، وعجائب الكون والبنيان في العراق والبصرة، وأخبار دار فتحها، والوقت الذي بنيت فيه، وما فيها من العجائب، والقول من الأبلة والقول في واسط والنبط والخوز، والقول في بغداد وأخبار كور دجلة والقول في خراج الدنيا وما كان يحمل إلى بيت السلطان من بلد إلى بلد... والقول في الأهواز وفارس ومدنها، والقول في قرميسين وأخبار شبريز، والقول في همذان وعجائبها. والقول في نهاوند وأصبهان وقم وعجائبها والقول في المغرب والشام ودمشق واليمن... والقول في الترك وأخبارهم وقبائلهم وشرائعهم... جمعها من مصادر متعددة بعضها كتابي ككتاب أخبار الصين والهند والحيوان للجاحظ، وفتوح البلدان... وبعضها الآخر روائي وهي لشيوخ روى عنهم كأبو يوسف يعقوب بن إسحاق، وأبو حامد بن جعفر المستملي وغيرهما...
ونظر لما أثاره هذا الكتاب من جدل في نسبته إلى مصنفه ومصادره فقد عني المحقق بتحقيقه وتجلي عمله أولاً: المقارنة بين النسخة الأصلية للكتاب ومختصر كتاب البلدان (للشزري)، ثانياً: تدوين ترجمة لمصنف الكتاب، ثالثاً: ضبط النص، رابعاً: استدراك ما أسقطه مصنف مختصر "كتاب البلدان" من فقرات وفصول، ومعلومات مهمة أوردها ابن الفقيه نقلاً عن مصادره المختلة.
