اليعقوبي (000 - بعد 292 هـ = 000 - بعد 905 م)
أحمد بن إسحاق (أبي يعقوب) بن جعفر بن وهب بن واضح اليعقوبي: مؤرخ جغرافي كثير الأسفار، من أهل بغداد.
كان جده من موالي المنصور العباسي.
رحل إلى المغرب وأقام مدة في أرمينية. ودخل الهند. وزار الأقطار العربية.
وصنف كتبا جيدة منها (تاريخ اليعقوبي - ط) انتهى به إلى خلافة المعتمد على الله العباسي، وكتاب (البلدان - ط) و (أخبار الأمم السالفة) صغير، و (مشاكلة الناس لزمانهم - ط)) رسالة.
واختلف المؤرخون في سنة وفاته، فقال ياقوت: سنة 284 ونقل غيره 282 وقيل 278 أو بعدها، ورجحت أخيرا رواية ناشر الطبعة الثانية من التاريخ إذ وجد في كتاب البلدان (الصفحة 131 طبعة النجف) أبياتا لليعقوبي نظمها ليلة عيد الفطر سنة 292 هـ

إن من أمتع الكتب قراءة وفائدة تلك الكتب التي تحكي تاريخ البلدان، والمدن ونشأتها، وأسباب، وعادات أهلها، وتقاليدهم، ولا سيما أن كثيراً منها ما زال حتى أيامنا هذه. إن كتاب البلدان للمؤرخ الرحالة "أحمد بن أبي يعقوب الشهير باليعقوبي" غني جداً بسعة آفاقه وإطلالته التاريخية على أسباب نشوء وتسمية البلدان، والمدن، والأمم وتاريخها. والجدير ذكره أن اليعقوبي في هذا الكتاب يذكر مشاهداته في تلك البلدان والمدن، ويذكر أيضاً سؤاله أهلها عن بعض الأمور، ثم يورد رأيه فيما سمعه منهم هل كان منطقياً مقنعاً أم هو محضّ خرافة تناقلها أهل ذلك المصر. وفي معرض حديثه يعلِّق على ذلك مشيراً إلى بُعد رواية أهل ذلك الزمان عن المنطق والعقل، وذكر من فتح البلاد من الخلفاء والأمراء ومبلغ خراجها، فلم يدع صغيرة ولا كبيرة وقف عليها إلا وأحصاها في الكتاب، فجاء مصنفه كتاب "البلدان" أقدم مصدر جغرافي، وأوثقه لما تحمّله من تأليفه من عناء وعناية وحسن بلاء. ولكن مهما يكن الأمر فقد جاء كتاب "البلدان" كتاباً ممتعاً، تاريخياً، وجغرافياً على يد رحالة عالم بالأسفار وبأخبار الأمم السالفة.
