على الرغم من تأليف العلماء للعديد من الكتب حول مقتل الإمام الحسين عليه السلام منذ الأزمنة البعيدة أي في القرن الثاني وحتى العصور المتأخرة ككتاب نفس الهموم للمحدث القمي، إلا أنها لم تلق الشهرة والذيوع الذي ناله الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا، وذلك لاهتمام مؤلفه بصم ما تشتت من مواضيع جاءت في حياة ومصائب المعصومين الأربعة عشر وشهداء وسبايا كربلاء مع مراتبهم. وبالرجوع إلى فهرس الكتاب نجد أنه ينقسم إلى ثلاثة أقسام تم الحديث فيها عن ما يلي: القسم الأول: ذكر مصائب المعصومين الأربعة عشر عليهم السلام. القسم الثاني ذكر مصائب شهداء كربلاء إلى مقتل الإمام الحسين عليه السلام. القسم الثالث: الحوادث المؤلمة المتأخرة بعد استشهاد الإمام الحسين عليه السلام من كربلاء إلى الشام ومنها إلى المدينة.
