ما أن تغادر الحصن الكبير في قلعة حلب، وعلى بضعة أمتار منه، ثم إلى اليمين من الطريق المؤديالي داخل القلعة، حتى تجد درجاً ضيّقاً منحوتاً في الصخر.
في نهاية الدرج، وعلى عمق خمسين متراً من الأرض، قاعة كبيرة كانت خزّاناً للماء بناه البيزنطيون، ولذلك كانت تسمى القاعة البيزنطية، أو صهريج الماء.
وقد استعملت القاعة لهذا الغرض - أي تخزين المياه، لعصورٍ تالية، وفي العهد العثماني تم تقسيمها إلى قسمين بقى الجنوبي منها للغرض نفسه، وخصص الشمالي ليكون سجناً...
وفي مطلع الإنتداب الفرنسي حوّل الفرنسيون القسمين معاً إلى سجن لم يكن البرد يغادره يوماً، وتنز الرطوبة من قرميد جدرانه، ويُمنع عن نزلاته الطعام والشراب، فيموتون جوعاً وعطشاً وبرداً...
ولذلك سمّي حبس الدم.
