"حصيلة سلسلة من المحاضرات"، وخلاصة تأملات وجهود بدأها المؤلف منذ العام 1944، وتفاقمت بالشكوك حول إمكان الإحاطة بموضوع بالغ الإتساع والتعقيد كـ "علم اجتماع المعرفة"… وقد سعى المؤلف، كما في كل أعماله الاجتماعية السابقة، إلى إبراز التنوع الوافر والتغاير اللامتناهي سواء في الأطر الاجتماعية أم في التجليات المتوافقة مع المعرفة. وهنا يستلهم المؤلف القول الجازم بأن "التجريبية النسبية" هي الجهاز المفهومي الضروري لعلم اجتماع معرفة علمي حقاً، أي لعلم اجتماع معرفي متحرر من كل ابتسار ومن كل مفهوم شائع. ويرمي المؤلف من وضعه هذا الكتاب، إلى صياغة برنامج جديد للأبحاث، أكثر مما يرمي إلى تقديم نتائج نهائية، يحاول باستمرار أن يكتشفها ويصوغها بتواضع علمي رفيع. وفي ضوء هذا التعريف، تشكل ترجمة كتاب "الأطر الاجتماعية للمعرفة"، إضافة ضرورية الى مكتبة علم الاجتماع العربية والمكتبة الفلسفية.
