ساهم العالم العربي يشكل كبير في تطوير المعرفة الإنسانية، وكاهن المحور الذي ربط بواكير هذه المعرفة بطلائع تطور المعرفة الحديثة في الغرب. وبالرغم من الإمكانات الهائلة والثروات الطبيعية التي يمتاز بها العالم العربي، إلا أنه يواجه الكثير من المشكلات التي تتعلق بالتنمية ومنها مصادر المياه، نفاد مصادر الطاقة غير المتجددة، الغداء، الصحة، التعليم، التلوث، الأمن القومي، حقوق الإنسان، والإنفاق العسكري وسواها. أمام هذه المشكلات التي أضعفت الوعاء الثقافي للأمة، تبرز الحاجة إلى مصدر معرفي يقدم مقاربات موثوقاً بها، شاملة ومتكاملة تعمل على تفعيل القدرات الإنسانية من الفكر الخلاق والإبداع والابتكار لدى المواطن العربي للأخذ بعناصر المجتمع المعرفي والولوج بزخم، بما يتسلح به العقل الإنساني من رأسمال بشري، لبنان الاقتصاد المعرفي القائم على مهارات المعرفة والتعليم والتعلم مدى الحياة.
من هنا جاءت فكرة إصدار الموسوعة العربية للمعرفة من أجل التنمية المستدامة بدعم من مشروع الموسوعة العالمية للنظم الداعمة للحياة (EOLSS) والذي تشرف عليه منظمة اليونسكو، على أن تقوم الأكاديمية العربية للعلوم بالعمل على إصدار هذه الموسوعة.
تهدف الموسوعة العربية للمعرفة من أجل التنمية المستدامة إلى تقديم كيان معرفي شمولي مرجعي تكاملي لتوفير كل الحاجات اللازمة لمواصلة الحياة. ونأمل أن تشكل هذه الموسوعة النواة لفهم أفضل للتنمية المستدامة، وأن يتمكن من استخدامها السواد الأعظم من الناس على اختلاف تخصصاتهم ومستوياتهم العلمية، وأن تكون مرجعاً موثوقاً به للمعرفة من جميع جوانبها المتعلقة بنظم الحياة، من ثروة اقتصادية وبيئية واجتماعية، وستعمل هذه الموسوعة على تعزيز التنمية النظامية للمعرفة في نطاق هذه الثروات التي تعد ضرورية لضمان الأمن والسلام وبخاصة في عالمنا العربي.
ولتحقيق هذه الأهداف تم تقسيم الموسوعة إلى أربعة مجلدات، المفاهيم المتصلة بالبعد الاجتماعي للتنمية المستدامة، قوى الفعل الاجتماعي، مجالات الفعل الاجتماعي، والفعل الاجتماعي في السياق العالمي، وقد قام بتحرير هذا المجلد الدكتور الطاهر لبيب، مدير عام المنظمة العربية للترجمة-بيروت.
