نعتقد أن على علماء الإجتماع الباحثين الإجتماعيين, أن يكونوا فهما لممارساتهما المهنية الخاصة, والتي لا تزال غامضة, وفى حالة من الإرتباك بين ما يقومون بعمله فعلا وبين ماهو متفق عليه فى العرف العلمى بالنسبة لما ينبغى عمله, أى بين ما يجب أن يكونوا عليه- وما يقوموا به بالفعل.
ولقد خطونا خطوة فى هذا الكتاب بإقتراح نوعية الأسئلة التى نحتاج أن يوجهها علماء الإجتماع والباحثون فى عملهم, وذلك إذا رغبوا فى فهمها على أفضل وجه, فإسهاماتهم ليست فقط لوضع السياسات, ولكن أيضا لوضع أشكال أخرى لحل المشاكل الإجتماعية.
كما نقدم أيضا قائمة مراجع مطولة بقصد تسهيل العمل حول هذه الموضوعات, وقد وصل كل منا إلى هذه الدرجة من الإهتمام من خلال أعمالنا المبكرة, وأنه من الممكن إنجاز تعاون مثمر, كان يبدو من قبل غير ممكن تحقيقه, وقد تم واحدا من تلك الإنجازات, عن طريق التدريب, ونمط التفكير الذى أضيف إلى تاريخ العلاقة المتبادلة بين الظواهر, والتى سوف لا تبقى منفصلة عن بعضها كى تحقق يسرا فى تحليلها, الثانى يكون تاريخيا, بفضل الشرائح القطاعية المقارنة للقطاعات غير المكتملة التمييز, والتى تدفع نحو التميز الواضح الذى يسهل التسجيل على الورق بصور أكثر مما توجد عليه فى دنيا الواقع, ورغم أن مشاركتنا كانت مثيرة, فهى ودية وسارة, وأحيانا مبهجة وإن لم تكن فى بعض الأحيان بالأمر الهين.
