اجتمع للإمام علي (كرم الله وجهه) العلم والقوة، إذ ارتبط اسمه بأشرف الأماكن وأقدمها، بيت الله الحرام، الكعبة المشرفة، التي كانت ولادته فيها. كما ارتبط اسمه بأشرف الأسماء على الإطلاق فابن عمه ومربيه الرسول الأعظم سيد الأولين والآخرين صلى الله عليه وسلم، القائل (أنا مدينة العلم وعلي بابها ومن أراد المدينة فليأت من بابها)، فهو أول من خاض في العلم الإلهي.
ونهج البلاغة يزخر بدقائق هذا العلم، كما أنه سيد البلغاء دون منازع وإمام في تناول الأسلوب والبيان العربي. أما علم لفلك فقد كان الإمام علي شارحاً له، وأما الفقه فكفاه شرفاً أن جميع فرق الإسلام تنتهي في علومها إليه وإن جميع ما وضعه المفسرون من أصحاب المذاهب الأربعة عائدة في الغالب إلى فقهاء الصحابة الذين أخذوا علمهم عن الإمام علي كرم الله وجهه. والصوفية تقدم الإمام علي على غيره في الحقائق الإيمانية كما أنه نظم الشعر وكان يرتجله ارتجالاً. وهذا الكتاب يقدم شذرات من وصايا الإمام علي وديوانه مرتب بحسب حروف الهجاء.
