لم تشر المصادر الأدبية القديمة إلى أن للإمام علي ديواناً شعرياً، ومع ذلك كثرت في الآونة الأخيرة طبعات ديوانه، أو ما نسب إليه من شعر، وتختلف هذه الطبعات اختلافاً كبيراً في عدد القصائد والمقطوعات الشعرية المنسوبة للإمام. والدارس لشعر علي يجد أن معظم ما نسب إلى الإمام. والدارس لشعر علي يجد أن معظم ما نسب إلى الإمام هو عبارة عن مقطوعات شعرية مبثوثة هنا وهناك في المصادر الأدبية المختلفة، ومنها "أدب الدنيا والدين" و"شرح نهج البلاغة" و"زهر الآداب"، و"بهجة المجالس"، و"نور الأبصار" و"المستطرف من كل فن مستظرف وغيرها.
كما يجد أن الكثير من شعره ينسب إلى غير الإمام كأبي العتاهية، والإمام الشافعي، والأفواه الأودي، ومحمد بن بشير وغيره. والطابع العام الذي يغلب على ما نسب إلى الإمام علي من شعر هو الحكمة والتأمل والزهد والتدين بأسلوب فصيح واضح بعيد عن التكلف اللفظي، والتقعر المعنوي، ولذلك شاع على الألسنة، وذاع في مجالس الوعظ.
وهذا الكتاب يضم بين طياته العديد في المقاطع الشعرية المنسوبة إلى الإمام علي عنى المحقق بترتيبها على حروف المعجم مع شرحها شرحاً مستفيضاً والتقديم لها بمقدمة كانت بمثابة ترجمة للإمام علي بن أبي طالب عليه السلام.
لا تذكر سيرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قبل الهجرة إلا وتشفع بمواقف حاسمة لعمه ومربيه أبي طالب، المعروف بكمال عقله وصواب حكمته والمشهور بكلماته الرصينة الشافية. وكان أبو طالب إذا همه أمر عبر عنه شعراً، كما قد يعبر عنه نثراً، لذا جاء شعره في معنى محدود وأغراضه تكاد تكون خاصة بمعان شريفة، أبرزها: الدفاع عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ودعوة قريش إلى عدم مهاجمته وإلى أن يكونوا في صفه، وتوحيد القبائل والبطون والمسالمة دون حرب، إضافة إلى الفخر بقوته وقوة بني هاشم.
