يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع التربية من منظوره التنموي الواسع الذي يتضمن توارث الثقافة ونقل المعارف والمهارات عبر الأجيال، بهدف تمكينها، وذلك من خلال التعليم المجتمعي بشقيه النظامي وغير النظامي، مع التأكيد على العلاقة التفاعلية والتكاملية فيما بينهما. من هنا، وحتى يؤدي هذا التكامل إلى تعليم فاعل، وأن يتصف بقدرته على المشاركة والتكيف، فلا بد من أن يتبنّى التعليم المجتمعي منهج الاستمرارية والمرونة.
انطلاقاً من قناعتنا بأن العملية التعليمية التعلمية هي جزء أساسي من العملية الثقافية، فمن غير الممكن أن تنتج هذه العملية المخرجات المنشودة دون ارتباط وثيق وعضوي بين ما "يعلم" وما "يثقف".
وبالتالي، فمن مقومات إنجاح هذه العملية ضرورة دمج التعليمي التعلمي في السياق الثقافي المجتمعي والإنساني. إن قوقعة العملية التعليمية في داخل إطار المدرسة الرسمية أو الجامعة...الخ، ستؤدي إلى بتر الفعل التربوي وتجزئته. وهذا سيتطلب إعادة النظر في أسس العملية التعليمية ومفاهيمها السائدة، وإعادة هيكلة النظام التعليمي، بحيث تؤدي إلى انفتاح هذه العملية وكسر الجدران التقليدية المحيطة بها لتشمل المجتمع برمته.
لقد طرحنا آراء، بعضها جذري، حول طبيعة ما نعلم وما يجب أن نعلم ونتعلم، وما هي استحقاقات أجيالنا المستقبلية علينا. وسعينا لطرح تساؤلات حول كيفية خلق جيل حر بأكمله، مبدع بأكمله، يثور ضد الظلم والاضطهاد، ويصر على أن يتعلم عن طريق طرح الأسئلة الأساسية والمهمة، أكثر من الانشغال بالحصول على أجوبة سريعة وروتينية.
