هذا الكتاب، هو باكورة أعمال ينتجها المركز اللبناني للدراسات والحوار والتقريب، تتمحور حول متابعة المسألة السياسية في التفكير والوعي الإسلامي الشيعي، رصداً وبحثاً وتحليلاً. ولما كان حاضر الفكر السياسي الإسلامي الشيعي لا ينفصل عن ماضيه الإسلامي ولا عن خصوصياته التي تميزه من دون أن تفصله عن العام الإسلامي، ولم يكن بالإمكان فهم أو تفسير راهن السلوك الإسلامي الشيعي المعاصر في المجال العام، إلا بالعودة إلى محددات هذا السلوك، الذي نشأ في فترات التأسيس الأولى للإسلام، ونما وتشكل في عصور التقلبات والتحولات السياسية للتاريخ الإسلامي، رأينا ضرورة، استحضار ما أمكن استحضاره من النصوص الصادرة عن أئمة أهل البيت والناقلة لمواقفهم وتقيراتهم والحاملة لدلالات ومغاز سياسية كلية.
إن غايتنا التي لا نخفيها ولا نود إلزام أحد بها، من هذا الكتاب، هي أن نفتح باباً على قراءات مستمرة لنصوص الأئمة ومسالكهم في التعامل مع الموضوع السياسي، بما فيه موضوع الدولة. لعلنا ننتهي من خلال ذلك في ما يعود إلى مسألة الدين والدولة، أو الإسلام والدولة، أو الشيعة والدولة، إلى خلاصة مفادها أن الدولة في المنظور الإسلامي الشيعي لا تحمل خصوصية مفارقة للمنظور الإسلامي العام أو مباينة له. كما أنها -أي الدولة- ليست أمراً تعبدياً، بل هي ضرورة اجتماعية تدبيرية تقدر ضروراتها بحسب ظروفها، وأنها ليست أطروحة إيديولوجية تتخطى أو تتعالى على المتغيرات والمستجدات المعرفية والحياتية والتنظيمية، التي تستلزم التغيير فيها وفي دورها من دون قطيعة مع الثوابت.
