يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه مجموعة بحوث كتبت خلال الثمانينات ومطلع التسعينات. وهي تتقاطع حول محورين أساسيين: قراءة في نظام الهيمنة والاستتباع المتحكم بوضعية الوطن العربي والعالم الثلث، وقراءة نقدية للماركسية الجديدة كما تبدو من خلال كتابات سمير أمين في مقاربتها لقوانين التشكل التاريخي للظاهرة الرأسمالية، واستطراداً إعادة فتح النقاش حول العديد من المرتكزات النظرية والمنهجية التي بلورها الفكر الاقتصادي الحديث في تصديه لمعالم تكون النسق الغربي وأواليات اشتغاله على المستوى العالمي.
لقد كتبت هذه الدراسات قبل انهيار الاتحاد السوفياتي ومنظومته الاشتراكية. إلا أن هذا التحول التاريخي وما يطرحه من إشكاليات تغطي كامل مساحة العلوم الإنسانية، لا يتعارض مع النتائج التي توصلت إليها هذه المعالجة النقدية للفكر الماركسي بما هو متكون أساس من متكونات الفكر الاقتصادي والسياسي الذي أسهم في صياغة تصور إيديولوجي معين يضفي شرعية عقلانية على منطق اشتغال النسق الغربي على المستوى العالمي، وذلك بغض النظر عن انتقال مراكز ثقله بين هذه الدائرة القومية أو تلك.
