هذا الكتاب ليس كتاباً تاريخيا، بل هو نظرة إلى الحاضر، واستشراف للمستقبل، من خلال عدة موضوعات يتطرق لها الكتاب في فصوله الأثنى عشر، مركزاً من بينها على ثلاثة جوانب رئيسية هي: مجتمع ما بعد الرأسمالية، والنظام السياسي في زمن ما بعد الرأسمالية، والتحديات المعرفية. ولم ترتب هذه الأجزاء الثلاثة وفقاً لأهميتها، ولكن وفقاً للمعيار التنبئ.
إن هذه الحقبة التي نعيشها هي مرحلة تحول، يتساءل فيها البعض عن مستقبل هذا المجتمع، وهل سيكون حقاً كما يتمنونه "مجتمع المعرفة"؟ ويعتمد ذلك على ردود فعل الدول المتقدمة تجاه تحديات حقبة التحول "مجتمع ما بعد الرأسمالية"، وكذا على القادة المثقفين ورجال الأعمال والسياسيين، وفوق هذا كله لا نغفل دور كل واحد منا في عمله وحياته. وبالتأكيد هذا هو الوقت المناسب لتشكيل المستقبل؛ لأن كل شيء حولنا يتغير بسرعة، وبالتالي فهذا هو وقت العمل.
