تعتبر البلاغة في علومها الثلاثة: المعاني والبيان والبديع، أصلاً من أصول الدراسة الأدبية، لا بد لكل ناقد أن يعود إليها ويتبين مكامنها ومواضعها لينتهي إلى تحديد رأي في عفوية الكاتب أو الشاعر وطبيعته، أو في تكلفه وتصنعه، وغلى غنى خياله أفقره، إلى ما هناك من أحكام لا بد، لإصدارها، من العودة إلى وجود البلاغة المتوفرة. كما أن التمرس بهذه الفنون ينمي في المنشئ حسه الجمالي، ويرهف ذوقه الأدبي، ويغني منه الخيال والقدرة على إنشاء الصورة الشعرية، ويحسن من مشاعر وأحاسيس.
لهذا حرص في هذا الكتاب على استلال أجمل الأقوال من التراث العربي، شعراً ونثراً، تتضمن هذه الفنون البلاغية، ليكون القارئ على بينة منها، ويجعلها مثالاً يحتذيه في عمله التأليفي، ونهجاً ينهجه في اختيار الكلمة أو الصورة وهذه الفنون منها ما تناول اللفظ، ومنها ما يتناول المعنى، وهي موزعة على علوم ثلاثة، كما ذكرنا في البداية، وهي: المعاني والبيان والبديع، وكل علم يتفرع إلى فنون... وقد ذكر هنا أي في هذا الكتاب كل فنون البلاغة، في علومها الثلاثة مجتمعة، مرتبة ألفبائياً، مع إعطاء تعريف موجز عن كل فن في البداية قبل إيراد أروع ما قيل فيه.
