ما كان يدور في خلد أحد أن تكون نهاية هذا الطاغية المسمّى هولاكو، هذا الذي أحرق بغداد، عاصمة الخلافة، وأغرق أهلها وكنوزها ودورها وخزائنها في مياه دجلة، وما دار قطّ في خلد أحد، وما كان يظنّ أبداً أنّ المنتقم من هذا الطاغية إنّما هو قائد من قوّاد دولة المماليك، البحرية، اسمه بيبرس الأول البندقداري، ويلقب بالظاهر ركن الدين، قائد بطل فذّ، يعتبر المؤسس الأول للدولة، وإن كان هو في التسلسل رابع المماليك البحريين، قائد تألّفت حوله قصص الفروسية الشعبية، قارنة الخيال بالتاريخ، أسر لويس التاسع، ملك فرنسة في معركة المنصورة، واغتال توران شاه آخر الأيوبيين، وانتصر على المغول، وزلزل الأرض من تحت أقدام الصليبيين، مسجلاً اسمه في الخالدين.
كيف حصل هذا، ومتى كان ذلك؟... هذا ما سوف نراه تباعاً في فصول الكتاب التالية، وهي: 1-الفصل الأول: أولى مواجهات المغول والمسلمين، 2-الفصل الثاني: المغول في بلاد الإسلام، 3-الفصل الثالث: المغول على حدود الفرات، 4-الفصل الرابع: إتساع رقعة حروب التتار، 5-الفصل الخامس: غزو عاصمة الخلافة، 6-الفصل السادس: مصر وبلاد الشام في دائرة الخطر المغولي، 7-الفصل السابع: هزيمة المغول، 8-الفصل الثامن: ما بعد عين جالوت، 9-الفصل التاسع: بيبرس في سجل الخالدين.
هذا، ولقد تقيّد المؤلف في دراسته هذه بأصول المنهج التاريخي التقريري غير البعيد أحياناً عن الشرح أو التفسير، أو التعليل، معوّلاً في ذلك على أهم المصادر التاريخية ذات الإعتبار، أو تلك التي لها صلة مباشرة بالموضوع.
