امتازت دولة المماليك في مصر والشام بكثرة أبطالها ورموزها الذين دافعوا عن الإسلام والمسلمين ببسالة وشجاعة منقطعة النظير، ويأتي في مقدمة هؤلاء الأبطال: السلطان الظاهر بيبرس، الذي يعتبره بعض المؤرخين أنه المؤسس الحقيقي لدولة المماليك، والمتتبع لسيرة الظاهر بيبرس يلحظ أنه كان قاسياً في بعض تصرفاته، ويرجع البعض هذه القسوة إلى طبيعة المرحلة التي كان يعيش فيها بيبرس، فقد كانت هذه المرحلة مليئة بالفتن والدسائس، الأمر الذي جعله يخطأ في بعض تصرفاته، غير أن كثرة جهاده وبطولاته من أجل إعلاء راية الإسلام، جعلت هذه الزلات تتوارى خلف ما قدم لدينه وأمته، وهذا ما جعل مؤرخو عصر المماليك- كالمقريزي وابن تغري بردي وبدر الدين العيني وابن إياس- يصفون بيبرس بأنه "أقام منار الإسلام والناس نيام" وبأنه "كان من خير ملوك الإسلام"، وفي هذه الصفحات نلقي الضوء على سيرة الظاهر بيبرس لتتعرف الأجيال المعاصرة على هؤلاء الأبطال، وما قدموه لخدمة دينهم وأمتهم، ويعرفوا أن تاريخنا الإسلامي ملئ بالصفحات المضيئة التي تدعو إلى الفخر والعزة، بالرغم من أن بيبرس كان مملوكاً من المماليك!!
