لقد أجمع المسلمون على وجوب المهر للمرأة على الرجل ولم يرد في ذلك خلاف لما جاء من نصوص صريحة في القرآن وتبيان واضح في السنة. ويعتبر المهر من الله سبحانه وتعالى على الرجل للمرأة تحقيقاً لهدفين معنوي ومادي، فهذا التكليف المادي على الرجل لتشعر المرأة بالأنس مع الزوج الذي لم تألفه من قبل والبيت الذي لم تسكنه وليكون هذا المهر عوناً لها على تجهيز نفسها بما تحتاج إليه من حلي وثياب وغيرهم، ولكن فرض المهور في يومنا هذا قد خرج عن الهدف الحقيقي الذي فرض من أجله، لذا بات من الضروري بحث هذا الموضوع نظراً لأهميته في مجتمعنا المعاصر، فكانت رسالة الشيخ محمود محمد الشيخ هذه في المهر في الإسلام بين الماضي والحاضر والتي تناولها على ضوء دراسة فقهية اجتماعية، حيث استخدم المنهج الوصفي التحليلي وفق المذاهب الفقهية بشكل عام والمطبق في المحاكم الشرعية بشكل خاص حيث تتبع المذاهب الققهية الأكثر انتشاراً مع الإشارة إلى بعض المذاهب الأخرى وثم أقام مقارنة بين المذاهب وبيّن موضع الاتفاق والخلاف في المسائل الخلافية ليقوم بترجيح بعض الآراء باستدلالات نقلية وعقلية بغية الوصول إلى الحقيقة التي تطمئن إليها نفس المؤمن.
