يتحدث الكتاب عن عشق الأديب لبلده دمشق فهو مولع بها أشد الولع, وقد استطاع المؤلف أن يجمع كل ما ألفه المؤلفون عن حبيبته, وكتبه الكاتبون عنها, وما تغنى به الشعراء والأدباء في محاسنها وبديع جمالها وبارع وسامتها ومفاتن سحرها, وقد قصد الأديب من دمشق الأسرار: أي أسرار محاسنها, وأسرارعشقه لها, وأسرار مكنون حبه لمعالمها و مجاليها, وخفيّ تعلقه بها في ماضيها وحاضرها, وفي استشراق مستقبلها. يحيا حياتها الواسعة الثرية ويتنسم عبيرها وهي تدنو منه وتحدثه بلغة ودية بليغة. لقد عمد المؤلف بموهبته القصصية الفنية أن يجرد من نفسه شخصاً آخر على طريقة الشعراء العرب القدماء ويستصحبه في ربوع دمشق, ويريه ما رآه من المحاسن ويشرح له ما يتملاه من بدائع القسمات, وما يتأمله من أوابد الآثار ويدعوه ليشعر معه بأدق الفروق بين تلك المحاسن في مختلف المراحل والأطوار, وفي شتى الفصول والأيام والساعات. حب المؤلف لدمشق حب عميق وشديد كحب العشاق المتيمين. إنه روحي وحسي معاً, حبه ملتحم التحاماً فيزيولوجياً بدمشق.
نشأ نصر الدين في دمشق, في بيوت دمشقية, قبل أن تتسع المدينة هذا الاتساع الكبير.
