يتألف هذا الكتاب من ثلاثة مطالب عريضة أولها: مطلب الحديث عن الإبانة في النظام اللغوي من خلال تقصي المصادر التي يتخلف فيها البس واسترفاد بعض الظواهر الصوتية كالتنغيم والمفاصل الصوتية، وبعض الظواهر الكتابية كالترقيم، والاستدراك الكلامي والأقواس، وتكامل السياق البينوي ومنطلق الأشياء في العالم الخارجي، إضافة إلى سياق الحال والأنظار الخارجية غير اللغوية.
والمطلب الثاني يتمثل في الحديث عن المواضع المرشحة لتخلق اللبس، ومنها اللبس الصوتي الآتي من تغييب التنغيم أو المفاصل الصوتية المفضية إلى تداخل حدود الكلم والجمل،ومنها اللبس الواقع في المستوى الصرفي، ومن بواعثه العوارض التصريفية ،واختلال الأصل الاشتقاقي،وتناوب الصيغ،واشتباه الصفة بالعلم،والمصدر بالاسم،واشتباه في تعيين بعض الفصائل النحوية ومنها اللبس الواقع في التركيب ،ومن بواعثه خفاء العلامة الاعرابية الكلي والجزئي ،ومرجع الضمير والتعلق،والحذف،وطول الجملة،ومرونة الجملة العربية،والإضافة، وحروف المعاني وتناوبها،واشتباه في تعيين الزمن النحوي،ومنها البس الواقع في المستوى المعجمي،ومن بواعثه المشترك اللفظي،والاضداد ،والمجالات الدلالية ،والدلالات العائمة المحتملة ،وتباين اللهجات،إضافة إلى اللبس الىتي من التطور الدلالي،وكذلك اللبس الآتي من الأسلوب. أما المطلب الثالث فهو قائم على تمثل تجليات اللبس في بعض مصنفات الأوائل،ومنها مشكل القرآن ومتشابهة وغريبه،وكذلك مشكل الحديث وغريبه،وكتب الاحاجي والألغاز،حيث تدل الأخيرة على أنها معلم مشرق في دلالته على استفزاز إمكانات اللغة في هذا المقصد.
