تعد الدراسات السوسيولوجية للإعلام من مجالات البحث المهمة في حقل الاتصال، لأنها تركز على الظروف المحيطة بالقائم بالاتصال، وهو يعد رسالته الصحيفة للقراء. فإذا كان يكتب في ظل غطاء ثقيل من الضغوط السياسية أو الاقتصادية أو المهنية أو الاجتماعية، فمن المؤكد أن المحتوى الإعلامي سيكون مشوهاً، ولا يحمل الحقيقة. بل تدخل في الأهواء والميول الشخصية والانتماءات والنوع البشري والحاجة المادية، والخشية من عواقب الكتابة في موضوع خطير، التي تشكل بمجملها رقيباً داخلياً قي عقل الصحفي، يتولى عمليات الحذف والإضافة.
ويعد هذا النوع من الرقابة الذاتية من أخطر أنواع الرقابة، وذلك لأن الرقيب يقبع في داخل عقولنا ويتسبب في تشتيت أفكارنا، وقتل كل مبادرة لعمل صحفي مبدع.
وقد لانجد صحفياً في أنحاء العالم يكتب مقالاته وقصصه الخبرية، دون أن يكون واقعاً تحت تأثير بعض هذه الضغوط، أن لم نقل كلها ولا سيما صحفيو دول العالم الثالث الذين يمارسون العمل الصحفي في ظل ظروف بعضها قهرية، تتمثل بقلة الأجور، وانعدام الضمان الصحي والاجتماعي، والطرد من الوظيفة دون إشعار مسبق، وتشغيل العاملين في المؤسسات الصحفية دون إبرام عقود عمل، إلى جانب الاعتقالات التي تتم على خلفيات نشر موضوعات لا تروق للسلطات.
وبعد أن قطعت الدراسات الإعلامية شوطاً كبيراً وتشعبت في تناول مختلف المجالات المتعلقة بالرسالة الإعلامية والوسيلة الاتصالية والجمهور، إلا أن نصيب القائمين بالاتصال منها لم يكن وافراً.
وتأتي هذه الدراسة في إطارها النظري لتسلط جانباً من الضوء على بيئة العمل الصحفي في العراق قبل وبعد (9 نيسان 2003)، في حين تناول الجانب الميداني المرحلة التي تلت هذا التاريخ في حياة الصحفيين العراقيين.
