يتناول هذا الكتاب كلاً من العلمانية والعصرانية، وبعض التحديات التي واجهتها المعرفة الدينية خلال العقود الأخيرة. وبشكل عام يستعرض الباب الأول من الكتاب الخلفيات التاريخية والفكرية والثقافية للعلمانية والعصرانية والتحديات التي واجهت المعرفة الدينية... بينما يتناول الباب الثاني العلمانية ومرتكزاتها الثقافية والاجتماعية.
من مباحث هذا الكتاب الأخرى، العصرانية أو الحداثة وضرورتها كممهدة لمناج ثقافي ملائم من أجل بلوغ التنمية. والسؤال الذي يثير نفسه هو: هل ينبغي تقليد نموذج التنمية في البلدان المتطورة، من أجل قطع مراحل التنمية؟ أي هل لا بد من اجتياز نفس المراحل التي مرت بها البلدان المتطورة، أم ينبغي أن ينبثق نموذج التنمية، م ن الداخل ومن المهد الثقافي للمجتمع، من أجل أن يتميز بالفاعلية الضرورية؟
العلاقة بين العلمانية والعصرانية من حيث الأصول والأسس هي بالشكل الذي لا يمكن أن نقول فيه أن العلمانية مصدر العصرانية أو نتاجها، وما يمكن أن يقال بجزم هو أن كليهما منطلق من مهد ثقافي واحد.
نظرية عصرية الدين وكذلك التعددية الدينية، من المباحث التي راحت تطرح خلال العقود الأخيرة، وبما أن الآراء الجديدة في حقل المعرفة الدينية، وليدة الثقافة الغربية، لذلك نراها منسجمة مع الفكر العلماني.
يبدو أن تناول هذه المباحث ودراستها في الجامعات ضمن دروس من قبيل المعارف الدينية والتعليم والتربية الإسلاميين، أمر ضروري كدراسات ثانوية. ولذلك تم طرح هذه المواضيع في درس "التعليم الإسلامي والتربية الإسلامية" وذلك ضمن إطار المعرفة الدينية، ثم أضيفت إليها تدريجياً: العصرانية والدين، والتقليد والعصرانية، والأصول الفلسفية والكلامية للأخلاق العصرية، والإنسان من منظار التقليد والعصرانية، وعصرانية الدين، والتأويل، والتعددية الدينية وأصولها الفلسفية.
