أحد المثقفين الطيبين سألني مؤخراً: ماذا تكتب هذه الأيام؟ قلت: أؤلف كتاباً عن النكتة. صمت قليلاً وتململ في مجلسه ثم قال: أنت أكبر من أن تكتب عن النكتة. ولم أجد في ذلك إطراء: فهل أنا أكبر من الجاحظ؟. حالة كهذه عشتها في بداية نشاطي ككاتب. وقتها كتبت مقالة عن الجنس، فكان هم أحد الأصدقاء المثقفين أن يهون من قيمة هذا العمل ويبين ضرورة صب الجهود في التوعية السياسية. كأني بهؤلاء الناس الطيبين يريدون القول: أهذا وقت الكتابة عن الجنس أو النكتة أو ألف ليلة وليلة... والأمة العربية في هذه الحالة التي هي عليها؟. لهؤلاء أقول: وماذا أفعل للأمة العربية، إذا كانت أحوالها على هذا السوء منذ مئات السنين؟ أنتفرغ جمعياً للثقافة السياسية ونهمل ما عداها؟ وهل إنقاذ الأمة العربية متوقف على كتابتي أنا العبد الفقير لله بو علي ياسين؟
