لقد ظل التعليم في الوطن العربي تقليديا، يعتمد على نظام متخلف وصعب من المناهج الدراسية التي ركزت اهتمامها على الجانب المعرفي فقط، فكثفت المادة التعليمية وألزمت الطلبة بحفظها واستظهارها عن ظهر قلب، وأغفلت الجوانب الوجدانية كالميول والاتجاهات والقيم، ولم تهتم بالنشاطات التعليمية، ولا بالمهارات والاجراءات التي تلزمها، كما أغفلت حاجات التلاميذ الأساسية، ولم تراع جوانب النمو المختلفة للإنسان كالجوانب الجسدية والعقلية والانفعالية والنفسية والاجتماعية والشخصية.
ويعد تصميم التدريس، أو هندسة التدريس عملية منهجية، تهدف في نهاية الأمر إلى النهوض بعملية التدريس، وتطويرها، وتحسينها، للوصول إلى الغايات المنشودة، وتوصييل الأهداف التربوية والتعليمية إلى التلاميذ بأقل جهد ووقت وكلفة، لذلك فقد جاء هذا الكتاب ليسلط الضوء على قضايا هامة تتعلق بهذا الموضوع مثل تطور علم تصميم التدريس والموضوع التعليمي وتحليل المهمة والأهداف التعليمية ومستويات الأهداف السلوكية دون أن يغفل التطرق إلى الأسس النظرية لنماذج وتصميم التدريس والتقويم في تصميم التدريس.
