في هذا الكتاب محاولة لفهم الإتجاه الفينومينولوجي (الظاهرياتي) مطبقاً ومجسداً في مجال ظاهرات الفن، ذلك الإتجاه الذي اصبح بشكل فرعاً مستقلاً متميزاً من علم الجمال المعاصر يُعرَف بإسم "الإستطيقا الفينومينولوجية" أو "فلسفة الجمال الظاهراتية".
وإذا كانت الفينومينولوجيا - في أبسط معانيها - هي علم وصف الظواهر أو الظاهرات الشعورية، من حيث أن الظاهرات في الفينومينولوجيا تعني "ما يظهر للوعي أو للشعور"، أي مجمل خبراتنا الواعية، فإن ظاهرت الفن ليست شيئاً آخر غير خبرات الفن، وهي تلك التي عادة ما نطلق عليها - تبسيطاً - اسم "الخبرة الجمالية".
وهذا يعني أن كل دراسة في مجال فلسفة الجمال الظاهراتية تكون - في نفس الوقت - دراسة للخبرة الجمالية ولماهية ما يظهر لهذه الخبرة من موضوعها، وهو العمل الفني.
