لماذا لم يبق الإنسان يحاكي الأصوات التي يسمعها، بأشكالها وأنواعها، وراح يصنع أصواتاً منظمة: "الموسيقى"؟ يبدو هذا السؤال من الوهلة الأولى سؤالاً بديهياً. إننا نعيد طرح هذا السؤال من البداية، في مقدمة الكتاب، بطريقة أخرى، لكن هذه المرة على أنفسنا، نحن، أبناء الحضارة العربية الإسلامية: هل لنا حقاً موسيقى؟ وللإجابة على هذا السؤال لجأنا إلى تحليل التراث والذي نعتبره بنى ثقافية لعصورٍ وأزمنة قديمة بقيت مطبوعة في ذاكرتنا.
فالموسيقى الغربية التي تدرس في معاهدنا، منذ أكثر من قرن من الزمن، غير قادرة أن تكون المحرك لتغيير التراث الموسيقى من حالة الذاكرة إلى فن موسيقي. فمهمة هذا الكتاب هي تأسيس نظرية موسيقيو لسد هذه الثغرة الثقافية.
الكتاب يطرح قضية الإختلاف الموجود بين النظرية الموسيقية الغربية وذاكرتنا الموسيقية ويعالجه في إطاره الفلسفي. كل نظرية موسيقية هي ذات شقين: الشق العلمي الذي تتوحد فيه كل النظريات الموسيقية والشق الفلسفي –علم الجمال-، الذي يختلف بإختلاف الموسيقى.
وإذا علمنا أن فلسفة الموسيقى هي من أقدم فروع علم الجمال، فلا عجب أن تكون لنا فلسفة جمالية تحدد موقع وعلاقة الإنسان بالكون. فهذه النظرية الموسيقية التي وضعناها تكشف عن منطلقات ذاكرتنا الموسيقية كالعلاقة التي نعتبرها أساسية بين الصوت والنغمة، الصوت واللغة، الصوت واللون، الصوت والفضاء، الصوت والزمن، لتخرجها من الغموض الذي يكتنفها.
