البحثُ مستمرٌ عن الشروط الواقعية التي يتحقّق فيها اليوم التنظيم الديمقراطي للمجتمع، بعدما اتُفق على أن الديمقراطية في عصرنا أضحت ضرورةً لا غنى عنها وإختياراً لا مفر منه، كونها تمنح كل الخيارات الأخرى، وعلى الأصعدة كافة: السياسة، الإجتماع، الثقافة والإقتصاد... بُعدها الإنساني الحقيقي.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب ليُسهم، ولو بقدر، في الإجابة عن بعض الأسئلة المحورية المتعلّقة بالديمقراطية والبناء الديمقراطي للمجتمع، ما هو الجدل داخل البناء الديمقراطي بين الرغبة فيه وإرجائه؟ هل الديمقراطية هي تحقّق شروطها الصورية أم الفعلية؟ هل الديمقراطية وسيلة أم غاية؟ كيف تكون التعدّدية مظهراً للديمقراطية وكيف تصبح عائقاً لها؟.
الدراسات التي يضمّها هذا الكتاب تتناول، من جهة، الخلفيات التاريخية والفكرية للتصوّرات الديمقراطية للمجتمع ونقد هذه التصوّرات عبر المظاهر التي تحققت فيها، وترتكز، من جهة أخرى، على البُعد الديمقراطي كبُعد إنساني يجعل الحياة الإنسانية ممكنة وقابلة للإندماج في العصر والتفتح الدائم.
"البُعد الديمقراطي" ترسيمة معمارية للبناء الديمقراطي للمجتمع المعاصر، نادراً ما كانت يمثل هذا الإتقان والوضوح.
