تأتي تسمية هذا الكتاب "تشخيص إضطرابات التواصل، وعلاجها" وذلك باستخدام مصطلح التواصل، ليضم جميع جوانب اللغة والكلام والسمع، حيث إن هذه الجوانب بتضافرها، وتفاعلها إنما تهدف بشكل عام إلى تحقيق هدف التواصل بين الناس.
وفي استعراضنا لما تم نشره في المكتبة العربية في مجال خدمة ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة، فقد وجدنا أن المكتبة ما زالت تفتقر إلى الكثير، إضافة إلى أن الحاجة في تزايد مستمر، وتظهر هذه الحاجة من خلال تزايد عدد الحالات من ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة، ومن خلال التوجه السريع نحو فكرة دمج هؤلاء الأطفال في المدارس العادية، فكان لا بد من رفد المكتبة العربية بإصدارات متخصصة تخدم هذه الفئة من أبناء هذه الأمة. ولقد اخترنا مجال إضطرابات التواصل لما رأيناه من نقص أكثر شدة من باقي مجالات خدمة هذه الفئة من الأطفال. هذا بالإضافة إلى افتقار العديد من هذه المنشورات إلى تحديد المصطلحات، وتعريفها. مما يزيد من صعوبة الحصول على المعلومة من قبل الباحثين عنها من الدارسين، وأولياء الأمور.
حاولنا من خلال هذا الإصدار عرض أكثر جوانب إضطرابات اللغة والكلام تأثيراً في عملية التواصل؛ فعرضنا إضطرابات اللغة بنوعيها، التطورية، والمكتسبة، ولقد ألحقنا بفصل عن اضطراب التوحّد، إيماناً منا بأن أهم جوانب هذا الإضطراب تكمن بالعجز اللغوي بجانبيه الإستيعابي والإنتاجي. ومن ثمّ عرضنا لاضطرابات الكلام، النطق، والطلاقة. ولقد أنهينا هذا الإصدار بفصل عن الإعاقة السمعية كتعبير عنا كون هذا الإضطراب يجمع بجوانبه مظاهر إضطراب اللغة والكلام.
