اللغة وسيلة أساسية من وسائل الاتصال الاجتماعي، وخاصة في التعبير عن الذات وفهم الآخرين ووسيلة مهمة من وسائل النمو العقلي والمعرفي والانفعالي.
فاللغة تحقق التواصل بين الناس، فمن خلالها يتواصل الناس فيما بينهم، ويحققون أغراضهم ومآربهم، فيتناقلون الأفكار، وكذا يتناقلون المشاعر والأحاسيس، ويطلبون تحقيق مصالحهم من بعضهم البعض. كما تتيح اللغة للإنسان التعبير عن أفكاره ومشاعره وآماله وآلامه، وهذه نعمة خاصة بالإنسان من بين سائر الكائنات، كما أن بعض الأطفال لا تنمو مهارات التواصل لديهم على هذا النحو السوي، بل تواجههم بعض الاضطرابات التي تتمثل في اضطرابات التواصل وهي قد تكون اضطرابات ملحوظة في النطق أو الصوت أو الطلاقة الكلامية أو تأخر لغوي أو عدم نمو اللغة التعبيرية أو اللغة الاستقبالية الأمر الذي يجعل الطفل بحاجة إلى برامج علاجية أو تربوية خاصة. ويمكن أن تظهر اضطرابات التواصل عند الأفراد من جميع الأعمار، وقد تتراوح هذه الاضطرابات في حدتها من اضطرابات خفيفة إلى اضطرابات بالغة الحدة و علاوة على ذلك، فإن اضطرابات النطق واللغة يمكن أن توجد كمظهر فريد عند الشخص، وقد تكون جزءاً من صورة معقدة من الإعاقات المتعددة. كذلك يمكن أن تكون هذه الاضطرابات وقتية ولا تستمر طويلاً، كما أنها يمكن أن تبقى مع الفرد مدى الحياة.
