جمع المؤلف في هذا الكتاب شذرات أعرابية فيها اللفظة الصحيحة، والجملة الموجزة المستقيمة، والوصف المادي المحسوس، فكانت قد جاءت كلها في سياق أخبار أهل البادية وأقوالهم وأشعارهم ونوادرهم المتناثرة في أمهات الكتب الأدبية القديمة.
وقد عمد المؤلف إلى جمع هذه الشذرات الأعرابية في موضوعات شتّى، واضعاً كل قول منها حيث يجب أن يوضع، تبعاً لوحدة الموضوع، فكانت أقوال في الغزل والمدح والهجاء والوصف والرثاء والحكمة والدعاء، وكانت أقوال طريفة، وأجوبة مضحكة طريفة، فيها من الصحراء قسوتها البالغة، وفي سماء البادية صفاؤها الفطري، ومن العروبة ما عند أبنائها من ذكاء وقاد، وبديهة مستنفرة، وفيض من القول يتجلى فيما خلفت من نثر وشعر.
