يحتلّ تاريخ عُمان مكاناً بارزاً في منطقة الخليج العربي، نظراً لعراقة عُمان تاريخياً، إذ إنها كانت ساحة لأحداث كثيرة، كان من أهمّها الصراع الداخلي سواء ما كان منه قبلياً أو صراعاً على السلطة.
فضلاً عن أن ذلك الصراع كان يأخذ صبغة معينة بين مدّة وأخرى تبعاً للمناخ السياسي الذي كان سائداً في المنطقة العربية، والخليج العربي على وجه الخصوص.
وفي المدّة موضوع الدراسة نجد أن الصراع السياسي في سلطنة عُمان اتّخذ من التيار القومي العربي الذي كان رائجاً في عقود الخمسينيات والستينيات من القرن العشرين وسيلة لتحقيق أهدافه في تغيير النظام السياسي القائم في السلطنة، والإستيلاء على الحكم، بذريعة تحرير عُمان من الهيمنة الإستعمارية، لا، بل تطوّرت أهدافه فيما بعد إلى تحرير منطقة الخليج العربي كلها من السيطرة الإستعمارية، وعندما فشلت تلك المحاولات في الإطاحة بالسلطان، أخذ يتشكّل نوع جديد من المعارضة السياسية، لم يكن في منهجه الفكري وعقيدته السياسية غريباً عن عُمان فقط، ولكنه كان غريباً على منطقة الخليج العربي بأكملها، إذ اعتنقت تلك المعارضة الفكر اليساري عقيدة لها، واتّخذت من أساليب عمله منهجاً للوصول إلى السلطة والإطاحة بالنظام السياسي القائم.
