يعد إبن رشد (1126م - 1198م) أهم فلاسفة الإسلام في عصره فكان له مؤلفات وشروحات ومصنفات فلسفية وعلمية وكتب فقهية وكلامية، وأخرى أدبية ولغوية، لكنه اختص شرح كل التراث الأرسطي ومنه الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والذي حدد إبن رشد الغرض منه بقوله: "الغرض ها هنا أن نثبت من أقاويل المفسرين في علم النفس ما نرى أنه أشد مطابقة لما تبين في العلم الطبيعي وأليق بغرض أرسطو وقبل ذلك فلنقدم مما تبين في هذا العلم ما يجري مجرى الأصل الموضوع لنفهم جوهر النفس ( ...) ".
يتضمن هذا الكتاب شرح لكتاب النفس لإبن رشد توزعت شروحاته على عدة أقوال وهي: القول في القوة الغاذية، القول في القوة الحساسة، القول في قوة البصر، القول في السمع، القول في الشم، القول في الذوق، القول في اللمس، القول في الحس المشترك، القول في التخيل، القول في القوة الناطقة، وأخيرا، القول في القوة النزوعية.
لم يتحايل ابن رشد على حل مشكلة القضاء والقدر، ولم يستخدم طرق الجدل التي رأينا عند الفرق الكلامية، بل آثر أن يواجه المسألة، لذا نراه يبدأ باستعراض الأدلة الشرعية والعقلية التي تشهد لكل من القائلين بالجبر المحض.
