يعد "كتاب النفس" لأبي بكر محمد بن باجة الأندلسي (توفي سنة 533 ه) من الكتب النفيسة في علم النفس عند المسلمين، ذلك أن مؤلفه يوضح فيه علم النفس على منهج أرسطاطاليس، وينتهي فيه إلى مسألة النبوة كما وصل إليها إبن سينا، وكما فصلها الإمام الغزالي في رسالته "مشكاة الأنوار"، وبهذا المعنى فإن إبن باجة يعرّف النفس وقواها "بأنها استكمال أولي لجسم طبيعي آلي، ويفصّل القوى الثلاث للنفس – الغاذية والحساسة والمتخيلة – ويقول عن الناطقة بأن النفس يقال عليها بنوع من الإشتراك. والنفس عنده من المتفقة أقوالها، فلهذا لا يمكن تعريفها من جهة واحدة، وتُعرف بنحو من الإشتراك فقط، وإنما يتعلق فحصه عن النفس، بالجملة، بنفس الحيوان". ولأهمية هذا الكتاب ومؤلفه يقدم الدكتور محمد المعصومي شرحاً عليه بالإستناد إلى مخطوط واحد وهو مخطوط "بو دليانا" من جامعة أكسفورد مع التزامه بالشرح يجمع المواد التي تيسير له فهمها من النص العربي، وبعد ذكر الشواهد والمترادفات من كلام إبن باجة أشار إلى مآخذ الأفكار في فلسفة ارسطاطاليس، وفي كتب الفارابي وإبن سينا وغيرهما من الفلاسفة اليونانيين والمسلمين.
وبالإستناد إلى ما تقدم تم شرح كتاب النفس لإبن باجة وتفكيك دلالاته ومعانيه في أحد عشر فصلاً في هذا الكتاب وقد توزعت على: "تعريف النفس" ، "القول في القوى الغاذية" ، "القول في القوى الحساسة" ، "القول في البصر" ، "القول في السمع" ، "القول في الشم" ، "القول في الطعم" ، "القول في اللمس" ، "القول في الحس المشترك" ، "القول في قوة التخيل" و "القول في القوى الناطقة".
