النبوّة والإمامة، أصلان من الأصول الأساسيّة التي تدخل في بنية العقيدة الدينية عند المسلمين على إختلاف توجّهاتهم الكلاميّة والفقهيّة، ونصير الدين الطوسي واحد من الروّاد الأوائل الذين سبقوا إلى التنظير الكلامي على أسس مختلفة عن الأسس التي كانت رائجة قبله.
والإنجاز الأهم الذي يُحسَب للطوسي هو بناؤه علم الكلام على أسس الفلسفة والبرهان بعدما كان جدليّ الطابع قبله، ورغم أهميّة الطوسي، وربما بسببها، اختلف في تقويم ما فعله، فمن الدارسين من رأى أنه أحسن إلى علم الكلام بنظمه إياه على أسس البرهان بعد كان قائماً على أساس الجدل، ومنهم من رأى أنه قضى عليه بدل أن يطوره، فقبل الطوسي كان يوجد علمان أحدهما الفلسفة والآخر الكلام، وبعده لم يبق إلا الفلسفة باسم علم الكلام تارة والفلسفة تارة أخرى.
وقد حاول الدكتور علي مقلّد تحليل فكر الطوسي وتراثه، مع تركيز الإهتمام على مسألتي النبوّة والإمامة عنده، وكشف عن الخلفيات الفكرية والثقافية التي يستند إليها في إتخاذ مواقفه التي اتخذها.
