يضيء هذا الكتاب على كواليس حملة بونابرت إلى الشرق وهو في مضمونه "مخطوطة نقولا الترك" عن الحملة الفرنسية على مصر وبلاد الشام، من دراسة وتحقيق الدكتور أمل بشور التي اعتبرتها "بداية تحول بين عصرين من تاريخ الشرق ونقطة له للإتصال بالغرب ... وهي أول محاولةٍ غريبة لإلقاء مراسي الإستعمار الحديث في الشرق العربي ... قائدها البطل المنتصر في أوروبا (نابليون بونابرت) ... كان يسير بهدى بين نجمه نحو هدف مجهول! ...". لقد سجل عام (1798م) آثاراً سياسية وإجتماعية وفكرية عميقة في تاريخ مصر الحديثة، كما سجل عام (1831م) منعطفاً مميزاً في تاريخ بلاد الشام، حين نقلت حملة محمد علي آثار تلك الحملة إلى سورية، آثار الحملة تلك اجتذبت اهتمام المؤرخ الشاعر (نقولا الترك) الذي عاصر الحملة وعاش أحداثها ورصد الوقائع التاريخية التي نجمت عنها، ولأن الترك شاعراً وأديباً، سيجد القارىء للكتاب أنه أمام كاتب يمسك التاريخ بطرفٍ والأدب بطرفٍ آخر في كتابه حول أحداث الحملة الفرنسية، وفي شعره الذي سجّل كثيراً من الملامح الإجتماعية التي سادت المجتمع اللبناني في نهاية القرن الثامن عشر وبداية القرن التاسع عشر والملامح الفنية البارزة في عصره. لقد بذلت الدكتورة أمل بشور في تحقيق هذه المخطوطة جهداً منقطع النظير تضع القارىء أمام مشاهد حيّة تشكل سجلاً تاريخياً حافلاً من الحياة الإجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية للقرن الثامن عشر. بدأت ذلك بحياة الترك وشعره، أسلوبه الأدبي، المؤلفات التاريخية المنسوبة إليه، طريقته في البحث التاريخي ومدى موضوعيته، ثم موقعه بين المؤرخين اللبنانيين والمصريين المعاصرين له وبخاصة الذين كتبوا عن تلك الحملة، ساعية إلى موازنة النسخ المتعددة التي نشرها كتابٌ عرب وفرنسيون لنفس المخطوطة وكذا في النسخة الخاصة بالمكتبة الظاهرية بدمشق في محاولة للوصول إلى النص الأصلي الذي كتبه المؤلف وهو (دراسة مخطوطة المكتبة الظاهرية – تاريخ نابليون الأول بقلم نقولا الترك).
موضوع هذا الكتاب أول احتكاك حضاري بحملة فريدة، جدير بالقراءة.
