أن تكتب في موضوع مثل ألف ليلة وليلة، سبقك إليه كثيرون من العرب والأجانب، ذلك مغامرة وتحدّ، غير أن كل كاتب محترف لا بد من أن يجيئه يوم يوضع فيه أمام مثل هذا التحدي، وعندئذ تعرف قيمته في هذه المجال أو ذاك. وها هو بوعلي ياسين يضع نفسه أمام هذا التحدي، وذاك بعودته مجدداً إلى حكايات شهرزاد ليقدم قراءة نقدية مغايرة عما ألفه القارئ في مثل تلك الأعمال الأدبية.
إذ أن الكاتب افترض، ومن خلال جموح خياله وجود مجتمع شهرزاد ومدينة شهرزاد ودولة شهرزاد، لينطلق في إجراء دراسة لهذا المجتمع وهذه المدينة وهذه الدولة، باحثاً عن دور الحكاية في حياة أفرادها: العلاقات بين الجنسين لديهم، نظرتهم إلى العالم بما فيها ديانتهم وعصبياتهم، نظام الحكم، الطبقات الاجتماعية. مقارناً هذا المجتمع المتخيل في الحكايات بمجتمعين واقعين: الأول، معروف من خلال كتب التاريخ والتراث، وهو المجتمع العربي الإسلامي في العصر الوسيط، والثاني مجتمعنا الشعبي الحالي الذي عشنا ونعيش بين أحضانه، أو مجاورين له، ليقوم من ثم بتدعيم هذه المقارنة، من جهة الدراسة، واصلاً أحياناً بين أجزاء متقطعة من موضوع معين، مستفيداً من جهة ثانية من معرفته التاريخية التي ألقت ضوءاً إضافياً على مجتمع أسلافنا. ومن وجهة ثالثة ساهمت إلى حد بعيد في فهم الكاتب لعناصر معينة من مجتمعنا الحالي. وفي تفسير ظواهر لم نكن نعرف لها أصلاً.
