أبو فراس الحمداني هو الشاعر الفارس الذي عاش إلى جانب ابن عمه سيف الدولة يقارعان الروم لحماية بلاد الشام من غزوهم لها، فخاضا أقسى المعارك وأعنف الحروب، وكان أبو فراس في كل ذلك في طليعة الجيش ينغمس في صفوف الأعداء صائلاً جائلاًن،حتى أحيط به يوماً فوقع في الأسر وطال أسره وحيل بينه وبين السيف، فلم يعد ذلك المغوار الذي لا يقر له قرار إلا على صهرة الجواد بين السيوف المجردة والرماح المشرعة، بل صار حبيس جدران تمنع عنه حتى نور الشمر المشرقة.
وإذا كان غيره من القادة العسكريين حين يصيرون إلى هذا المصير يقبعون حيارى بين الهم المقعد والأمر المثير، فيلوذون بالصمت ويخلدون إلى السكون، فإن هذا القائد العسكري يتفرد بينهم بأنه في أسره لا يقر ولا يهدأ، وكما كان قبل الأسر صاحب السيف البتار، يعود في الأسر صاحب القلم الهدار، يحمله اليوم كما كان يحمل السيف أمس عملاقاً بالقلم، عملاقاً بالسيف.
هكذا تفرغ أبو فراس في الأسر للشعر بعد أن كانت الحرب تشغله عنه فأنتج للأدب العربي شعراً تميز به، هو مزيج من الحماسة والحنين، عرف في التاريخ باسم "روميات أبي فراس" جمعت إلى الرقة قوة الديباجة فكانت فريدة من أعلى فرائد الشعر العربي. هذا هو الشعر الذي شغل السيد محسن الأمين في دراسته هذه.
