أبو فراس الحمداني، فارس وشاعر، ودوحة وريحانة. به انتهى الشعر حسب رأي ابن المعتز، وله فضل كبير في صنع تاريخ الدولة الحمدانية بسيفه وقلمه، بحريته وأسره. ففي كلتا الحالتين كان نبعاً ثرياً للشعر العربي، وللوجدان الإنساني، وللعاطفة الصادقة. ويمثل الكبرياء في التاريخ والشعر لأنه ملك ابن ملك، لم يقل الشعر، ولم ينشده من أجل التكسب والارتزاق.
أبو فراس الشاعر اليتيم، والشاب القوي، الذي كان نجماً يتلألأ في بلاط سيف الدولة في حلب، أمسى في لحظة أسيراً، يعيش في غياهب السجون، ويتحمل ألم الحديد والأصفاد. وفي هذا البحث يتناول "محمد رضا مروة" بالبحث والتحليل سيرة هذا الملك الشاعر، مميطاً اللثام عن أشهر أعماله الشعرية وإنجازاته في ذلك العصر، محاولاً الكشف عن سمات شعره، وألمه المدوي، وكبريائه. ولكن أهم ما وقع عليه الباحث في شعره هو ذلك الذي كتبه في–خرشنة-أثناء فترة اعتقاله وأسره.
