في روايته "زمبوه" يرصد "حبيب محمود" تحولات المجتمع السعودي من المرحلة القبلية إلى الزراعية مستلهماً عناصره من عوالم ريف المنطقة الشرقية وتحديداً بيئة المجتمع الزراعي في "القطيف" وذلك في أربعينيات القرن العشرين، ويفعل ذلك الروائي من خلال كتابه حكاية بطل الرواية (حسين) وهو إبن فلاح مستأجر بسيط يعجز عن الخروج من واقعه والطبقة التي ينتمي إليها، وسط مجتمع تحكمه طبقة صارمة تتمثل بوجود إقطاعيين زراعيين، ما عدا سلطة رجال الدين المتحالفين مع الإقطاع.
إذن، الموضوعة الطبقية هي ما ترصده الرواية وتدور حولها أحداث ووقائع مرتبطة بها، وتتمظهر في شبكة من العلاقات الإجتماعية، حيث يعيش القارىء تفاصيل الريف الدقيقة والوثيقة الصلة بإنسان ما قبل طفرة النفط، حيث نقرأ عن: صرام النخيل، تلف التمور بسبب حرارة الجو والرطوبة، خسارة عقد الإيجار، إحباط الفلاح المقيد بشروط مذلة، منافسة الفلاحين بعضهم، منافسة الفلاحين بعضهم بعضاً، وبعض الأساطير التي تمظهرت في المخيلة الإجتماعية حول الجن الذين يسكنون العيون الجوفية، ومشاهد ريفية، تفوح منها رائحة الليمون الأخضر إلى جوار شواء السمك من البيوت الساحلية.
وفي تظهير الحكاية، يستخدم حبيب محمود خطاباً روائياً يقوم على كسر وحدة الراوي، كسر خطية الزمن، تعدد صيغ الكلام، تعدد مستويات اللغة، والمزاوجة بين السرد والحوار. ولكل من هذه المقومات وظيفته في النص. وبهذا، لا تعود رواية "زمبوه" خارج الزمن الروائي الراهن بل تغدو داخله بامتياز، وخاصة أن المجتمع الذي تتحدث عنه لا تزال بعض ملامحه باقية إلى اليوم ...
