نقرأ في (كشوانية رقم 7) للقاص العراقي حبيب محمود، تعابيراً مغسولة ببياض الفؤاد ساقها بلغة طفل غرّ لواقع أوسع من مداركه بكثير، وعبر شخوص آخرين في حكاية يختلط فيها الواقع بالخيال. أحداث واقعة بين مدينتي كربلاء العراقية والقطيف السعودية، عام 1980م.
إنها تأملات ساعات يسيرة من يوم عمل الطفل السعودي في "كشوانية" العراقية، وفيها؛ يستنطق الراوي الشخصيات الثانوية لتتحدث في تعقيدات ذلك العالم الحساس. عالم الحكاية الأوسع هو ذلك المكان الصغير المعروف – عراقياً – باسم "الكشوانية" وهي المكان الذي يضع الناس فيه أحذيتهم قبل الدخول إلى الحرم. حاول الراوي / السارد قدر ما استطاع أن يركز التفاصيل في هذا المكان، ليستطيع البطل / الطفل التوقف في هذا المكان وسرد حكايته.
الرواية هي يوميات طفل يتلقى عرضاً للعمل في "كاشوان" مقابل (400 فلس) في اليوم ويبدأ ببناء أحلامه، ورواية يومياته.
"لم يبدأ أول نهاري سعيداً، ولا تعيساً. الوجوه قليلة. والجريدة التي كتبتها، قرأتها كلها مراراً. ليس لدي قصة جديدة ..! (...) ما بين مجيء الوجوه المعتادة وغيابها، تمر وجوه غير معتادة. تسلم أحذيتها قبيل دخول الحرم، ثم تتسلمها وهي خارجة منه (...)".
